Synopsis

Ty (Columbus Short, Cadillac Records) is a young armored car guard who is persuaded by his veteran co-workers to join them in emptying a truck of its $42 million cargo. Problems occur when the guards shoot a cop and Ty insists on helping him. Ty realizes the guards aren’t too keen on his idea, so Ty locks the injured cop, himself and the money in the armored truck.

Review

Armored is a basic script, but gives dynamic tension, good thrill and cast. It’s actually not a bad film for a night showing. I can see guys really liking this movie with the trucks and guns and the smell of cash money. All like a video game of some sort.

There really isn’t much to the premise. Ty Hackett (Columbus Short, Cadillac Records) is raising his brother; he needs extra money to keep their house. He works as an Armored Truck driver/guard and his coworkers want to rob one of their loads worth $42 million. Ty is reluctant to go in on it, but changes his mind wanting reassurance that no one will get hurt. Oh Ty, I’m so disappointed in your decision. Heck, I know times is hard, but dang, you have a job brother. Do the legal thing. And, your stealing $42 million, someone has to get hurt.

Anyhoo, the heist all goes to poop when they shoot a cop and Ty is shaking in his work boots. I don’t blame him. He thinks he’s next because he wants to get the cop help and he panics, takes the injured cop and locks them both in one of the armored trucks. Needless to say, the others are fit to be tied and try everything to get to Ty and the money.

I’m really glad that Columbus Short is getting shine in more films. He’s a really good actor and he proved his skills in the movie Cadillac Records. Hopefully he’ll continue to pick some other good rolls. Laurence Fishborne (CBS, CSI) plays Baines, a straight up jerk. I wanted to use a different word, but I want to keep this review PG.

I don’t know what it is about Matt Dillon but he plays a bad guy really well. Shoot, I’ve been watching him since the days of The Outsiders. Do you know how long ago that was? You remember The Outsiders with Ponyboy and Johnny?

Amaury Nolasco from Fox’s Prison Break and Max Payne plays Palmer, a really strange character. It must be how he looks or something, but he played a strange one in Max Payne too.

The entire cast is male. Well, there was one lady in it for about a 3 minute scene. Not really even worth mentioning. There are some okay moments and then there are some really great moments, when tension is building and all the guys are trying to figure out the best way to get Ty out of the truck.

The director Nimrod Antol did a couple corny and very obvious things. For example, Ty says in so many words he wanted Mike to promise him no one gets hurt. Some one does. Ty says in so many words, “You said no one would get hurt.” There are other moments too, but I’ll let you see for yourself.

If you miss this movie in the theater, make sure you rent it. If I never saw it and I ended up renting it, I’d be very satisfied with the pick.
