Review

This was actually a good rent-a-movie for a Sunday. I really liked the cast and the main characters’ stories. This film can take you on many highs and lows so be prepared to be jerked around like on an amusement park ride. I know Nights in Rodanthe left me kind of saying, “Awww, for real?”

Nights brings a subtle love story with actress Diane Lane (Jumper) as Adrienne Willis, a separated mother of 2. She goes away the weekend to help her best friend Jean (Viola Davis, Doubt) with her oceanfront Bed and Breakfast while she’s on business. There’s a possible big storm moving in, but it doesn’t stop Dr. Paul Flanner (Richard Gere, The Flock) from booking a room. And he’s the only customer who’s booked for the weekend. So, vulnerable jilted wife and disgruntled single man are all alone together for the weekend. Mmmm hmmm. I guess you catch my drift. You know…she helps him and he helps her and the rest is love blossoming.

There’s really not much I can say about the film without giving too much away. You can tell by the names Nights has an excellent cast. Lane and Gere have played in a couple movies together in the past so there definitely is chemistry. You want their characters to fall in love and enjoy seeing them do so. There’s friendship, family, love and heartbreak in this movie and it’s all felt. My issue is everything seemed rushed. I would have liked more screen time devoted to the lovebirds building a solid and truly felt relationship in Rodanthe. The movie is called Nights in Rodanthe. Not “Just Two Nights in Rodanthe.” I want passionate build up. I want sweet moments when the pair is together.

I never read the book this film is based on, so I’m not sure if it stayed true to it. I would like to hope it did for others who have read the book. I’ve heard the book is quite endearing. I didn’t get a chance to see this in the theater so I had to wait for it to come out on DVD. This was one that did not need to be seen at the showcase. I didn’t feel like I missed something spectacular all of those months ago. Lane definitely stole the movie with her acting skills. This woman has professional and raw talent. I enjoy watching her. If you are a fan of the cast, and like lovey dovey movies, then check out Nights. Oh, and bring a tissue.
