Review

Wow, okay, for a minute I just thought about the old-back-in-the-day flick Fatal Attraction. Now that is what you call a classic. Until this day, that movie stays etched in my mind. And because I remember it so well, there are some scenes from that film that were incorporated into Obsessed, one being the suicide trick. Heck, if I had known you could bite from another script and not get sued for it, I could have made a script just like Obsessed and reaped all the benefits.

Anyhoo, Obsessed brings a suspenseful semi-thriller when big-time Executive V.P. Derek Charles (Idris Elba, Rocknrolla) gets himself into a tricky situation with a newly hired temp named Lisa (Ali Larter, Heroes) at his office. This woman wants herself some Derek and she does not care he is a happily married man to a beautiful woman named Sharon (Beyonce Knowles, Cadillac Records) and has a precious son named Kyle. His life is seeming picture perfect until twisted sister-girl Lisa injects herself in the mix wanting to be Derek’s main squeeze.

Idris Elba – masking his British accent -- was the perfect man to play Derek Charles. He’s chocolate candy, very nice on the eyes, and he really seemed like he was a high-powered executive. It was very believable. However, he sure did some dumb things. His temptress, Ali Larter, also played her psycho part well. She was pretty, seductive, and just down right nuttier than a Nutty Buddy Ice Cream Cone. If you're going to play crazy, I believe you have to come hard with it and she delivered because I wanted to pimp slap her a few times.

No matter how many times Beyonce’s character's name Sharon was said, I just kept hearing the name Beyonce. I kept seeing Beyonce the singer and not Beyonce the actress. It just didn’t feel like she was in a role. I was rooting for Beyonce and not her character. Jeez, is that a bad thing? I think it could be because people may have trouble separating her songstress status from her actress status. Does home girl even have actress cred?

I know everyone went to see the movie because Beyonce was in it. I’m sure everyone had their own motives to why they wanted to see her -- some good and some bad. Beyonce wasn't as bad as I thought she'd be. She acts better when the scene calls for angry. This is the kind of movie where you put yourself in the situation and think,”Ohhhhhhh hech naw.” I like movies like this and Sharon/Beyonce reacted how I bet a lot of women would. So, I was pleased with her performance.

I had fun with Obsessed because my audience was really into it. There were some funny moments you couldn’t help but laugh at and just shake your head like, “Come on now.” My main issue though wasn’t the movie, but it was the trailer. The trailer just runs the movie down in 1 minute. Now why would they do that? Why give some of the best scenes away? I say leave a bit to the imagination. Why ruin it with TMI (too much information)?

I just want to make sure I do let you know, there are some cornballish lines, stereotypical characters and the same-old same-old with a crazed jealous woman wanting another woman's man. Some of it is so laughable, but what are you going to do? This movie sure isn't the Oscar winner of the year. I bet someone will even try to throw it in the runnings for a Razzie Award.

I know you have some questions like is Lisa the Nutty Buddy psycho going to get her comeuppance? Is Sharon the highly ticked off wife going to give Lisa the beat down that we all know she deserves, and that’s just from watching the trailer? Does Derek do anything to stop this ludicrousness? Well, you’ll have to see the film to find out. Did you actually think I’d tell you?
