Pineapple Express

This movie is crazy dumb, but in a great way. I cracked up because of the natural jokes, goofiness, and interesting characters.

Review

Sheeba sheeba ya’ll. This movie had so much ganja…okay marijuana that I literally thought that the high on screen was making everyone high in the theater. I couldn’t believe it. This movie is crazy dumb, but in a great way. I cracked up because of the natural jokes, goofiness, and interesting characters. Yes, this movie is a comedy, but the action and suspense is present in full force too. The writing and producing crew of Superbad & Knocked Up (Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Judd Apatow) did it again with Pineapple Express—a comedy that is definitely going to be another great success for the team.

Check this story. All-day-long weed smoking Dale Denton (Rogen) witnesses a murder by a major wicked drug lord (Gary Cole, Office Space) and a crooked cop (Rosie Perez, White Men Can’t Jump—I'm mad I had to go all the way back to this to cite her work) while getting his smoke on. Totally in a frenzy not knowing where to go, he rolls out to his drug dealer Saul Silver’s (James Franco, Spiderman) place for help. Dale figures the kingpin will be after them and possibly Saul because he dropped his doobie at the crime scene—the rare, potent and traceable "Pineapple Express". So they high-step it out of there to avoid capture or any threatened danger that can come their way. From there, the ludicrousness, and harebrained escapade begins.

Sure enough, every character holds their own and good for Apatow, Rogen and Goldberg for using a lot of the same actors in their flicks. They all have great on-screen chemistry and truly are silly funny. Like Craig Robinson (Knocked Up, NBC’s The Office), who played thug-for-hire Matheson, had me rolling. Yeah, he is a bit ghetto. Instead of him saying, “I seen you”, he says, “I seent you”. Did he have to tear up the English language sounding all ignorant being the only brotha up in the movie? But it was FUNNY! Whew, and his clothes are a fashion felony. He looked a HOT MESS! Not quite sure why he dresses the way he does, but someone needs to tell the man. I think he gets some advice—somebody clowned him for his British Knights. They should've also ripped on him for his pants....woooooooo!

I was also very impressed by James Franco (Saul). He plays the perfect pothead that had me believing he is on that funky stuff. I surely can’t forget sloppy looking Seth Rogen (Dale). He’s as natural acting as they come. His funny flow meter is always on point in Pineapple. He pulls you in. You like this guy just because. He shows so many emotions, the highs and lows. Manliness and babyness. His character is so much more than a one-dimensional character. I am wondering though, what is up with him looking so grungy and out of shape in this movie, and Knocked Up, but yet, he has a cute blonde girlfriend in both films? I’m having trouble wrapping my brain around this. Also, he seems to be a weed head in both. For a minute, I had to double check he wasn't playing the same character. MMM MMM MMM.

Pineapple Express brings the comedy for sure. It’s not lacking in laughs, action, and colorful characters. If you’re fans of the trio’s other works, they don’t disappoint their fans with this feature . It’s a fun film for any time of the day. Oh…and the rating of R is definitely right because it promotes partaking in psychotropic substances that certainly brings forth cosmic highs. In other words, sheeba sheeba ya'll. It's not for young folk.
